12 Dancing Princesses

A king in a far off kingdom has a problem. He has twelve beautiful daughters who sleep in twelve beds locked in their bedroom. The king gets them new shoes everyday, but by morning the shoes are worn full of holes as if they had been dancing all night. The king declares that whoever can solve the mystery of the princesses’ shoes will marry one of the princesses and will become the next king. Many princes try to solve the mystery and many fail. One lone soldier thinks he might be up to the test.

The fairy tale mystery of The Twelve Dancing Princesses was one of many stories written by the Grimm Brothers and added to their collection of tales almost 200 years ago. The Apprentices and Trainees of Northern Plains Dance bring this exuberant fairy tale to life with the Story Time Ballet performance series. These performances include audience participation and live story narration. This performance is approximately 40 minutes in length.

12 Dancing Princesses will take place on April 26, 2010 at 9:00am, 10:15am, and 2:00pm. Cost is $2.00/student and teachers and chaperones are free.

Oh yes, It’s that time of year.

Christmas is just around the corner, and The Nutcracker is even closer.

The Studio is filled with students each day, but the atmosphere has changed in the last few weeks. The air is filled with more excitment and nerves than ever. They know it, the staff knows it, and the public is beginning to know it- The Nutcracker is just weeks away and there is still much to be done.

With adding practically 70 new costumes this year, re-painting of sets, and the always time-consuming head piece making, there’s  a bit of stress around the studio. Like many in the Christmas season, there is just barely enough time to get all the baking, decorating, and Christmas shopping done. The Nutcracker family is experiencing the same kind of stress, only there is such a great bond that I know that we will pull it together by the time the curtain rises. Thanks to the very many parents that put hours and hours into steaming and mending costumes. Thanks to the staff members you work tirelessly long hours putting up marketing materials, making costumes, and running rehearsals. But most of all thank you to the students that put so much time, hard work, and dedication into this production.

Studio dress rehearsal is this weekend. There are still costumes to be made, props to be built, and posters to be put up, but I know, as time and time again has shown me, it will all come together in the end. What’s the fun if there isn’t a little stress involved right? (That’s what I keep telling myself). I’m just glad our NPD family is so tightly knit!

The sweet sounds of sugarplums…

For some, the holiday season starts the day after Thanksgiving. For some it’s when all the stores start putting out decorations and Santa hats. For me my holiday season starts before then, about mid-September with Nutcracker Auditions.

Christmas to me for the last 12 years has began with The Nutcracker. The anticipation to find out what role I would be playing that year, a party child, chinese tea, or maybe even a flower in the Waltz of the Flower corps ,was excruciating. The excitement was hardly bearable and when that cast list went up I was greeted with surprise and happiness. Now, as I am older I get to see the excitement on my sibling’s and student’s faces, and I think it is even more exciting than when I was their age.

Some people say they can’t take hearing Christmas music for more than a few weeks, preferably during the week before and week of Christmas. However, I always smile when I hear  ”The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” or the energetic Russian fill the halls of the grocery store, or come blaring out of my TV during a commercial, no matter if it’s September or December. It is amazing to me how this Holiday tradition goes beyond the stage into our everyday lives.

I invite you to come and see what this Holiday tradition is all about. The students have been doing an extraordinary job, and I believe this will be the best Nutcracker yet!
